Almost 3 years ago, I teared up one night, when, after our Friday evening church meeting, my then 4-year old daughter came out of her kid’s club and told me about the cycle of the book of Judges; Sin, Enemy, Repentance, Deliverer, Sin, Enemy, Repentance, Deliverer, etc., etc.
I teared up because I remember the very night when I was 19 years old, not even 2 years a Christian, learning that same cycle at a youth event. It still surprises me on a daily basis how I have a family that loves Jesus, and wants to follow him, and how my daughter knows so much of the Scriptures, that I did not know until my late teenage years and early twenties. It humbles me immensely because it seems such a foreign thing, out of reach. And yet, in some dreamlike state, God has blessed me with such a reality.
Why do I bring this up? Because our sending church does incredible work with kids. They know God’s Word so well, are taught to love it and live it. With half of our number being children, it is not a small thing, but perhaps the most important.
“We will not hide them from their children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.”– Psalm 78:4
One part of this, is that our very talented elder there, is a great musician. Over the years he has written many memory verse songs for the children in church, and for dozens of kids in the community who come to events and go home singing things like Acts 16:31. For those who love Slugs and Bugs, or similar, you’ll know how catchy good memory verse songs are, and how they infest a family for a long time!
A few years ago we all encouraged him to professionally record these songs for the benefit of others. The work began, and last year the first album was released (and a couple of singles).
The project is called “Soul Ceol”. For those outside of Ireland, Ceol rhymes with Soul (Sounds something like Ky-oul) and means music in the Irish language. So just “Soul Music”, but much catchier when half of it is in Irish!
Anyway, please go check out the music, use it liberally in your youth (or adult) events, and if you like it, why not think of donating so that more albums can be made. He has years of memory verses stored up, but it costs a lot to professionally record them. We would love for the world to hear more!
